To put it simply, black light is a type of ultraviolet light – specifically, ultraviolet A (UVA) light, where it emits ultraviolet radiation in the UVA band. These rays are low-energy and long-wavelength and are the least harmful as far as ultraviolet radiation is concerned.

Vitamin A and the B vitamins thiamine, niacin, and riboflavin are strongly fluorescent. Try crushing a vitamin B-12 tablet and dissolving it in vinegar. The solution will glow bright yellow under a black light.

Black lights can reveal human blood, urine and semen, even if they are cleaned up and invisible to the human eye under normal lighting. Forensic scientists can also find and examine fingerprints under black light after dusting the prints with a chemical that fluoresces under black light.
A very small amount of natural sapphires (sapphires can be any color except red) can glow under UV light. Natural colorless, pink, or occasionally blue sapphires with low iron content (iron is fluorescent quencher) can glow red, pink, or orange in long-wavelength UV light.
